Maintenance Tips for Your Commercial Refrigation
By implementing routine preventive maintenance you can save on energy and repair costs. While no commercial refrigeration lasts forever, preventive maintenance will extend the life of your equipment. These simple commercial refrigeration maintenance tips can guard against failure and also reduce the chances of emergency service caused by major component failure.
Note: Be sure to unplug your refrigeration unit before performing maintenance on items 1 & 2.
- Be sure to clean your evaporator and condensing coils every month to keep them free of dust, dirt and lint. The location of your condenser coil can vary so be sure to check your owner’s manual. It is a good idea to put a reminder in your monthly calendar so you don’t forget. When cleaning, be sure to always scrub with the coils up/down and never side/side. We recommend using soap/water or a commercial condenser coil cleaner. Be sure to reference your owner’s manual for this as well.
- You will also want to clean fan blades and motors once every month as part of your routine. Cleaning the fan blades helps to reduce drag on the motor. In most cases you will need to remove the fan cover so be sure to clean it as well. Use a soft cloth to wipe off the blades and the motor. If the blades are extremely dirty you may need to wash them as well. However, be sure to cover the motor with another dry cloth so that moisture does not cause damage to the motor.
- Check the door gasket for a proper sealing. Refrigeration doors that don’t properly seal or close right can cause the unit to overwork to maintain the proper temperature, therefore shortening the life of the unit and running up energy costs. Be sure to clean the door gaskets on a regular basis with a soap and water mixture.
Here are a few additional things you can do to assure your commercial refrigeration unit is operating properly.
- Inspect water and drainage lines to make sure they are not kinked or clogged. These items can sometimes go unnoticed which may cause condensation and water damage.
- Keep your commercial refrigeration equipment in good working order by replacing light bulbs in a timely manner and greasing hinges as needed.
- Be sure to check the holding temperature on all commercial refrigeration equipment several times a day. This will assure proper food safety and keep food from spoiling which can be costly to say the least.
At least once a year have a trained technician inspect your commercial refrigeration equipment. They will have a full check list of items and procedures that will keep your equipment running at peak performance.
