Fowler and Sons was saddened to hear about the recent passing of Betty Shugart who died Tuesday, November 12, 2013. Betty was a long time employee of the Angus Barn in Raleigh for more than 50 years and Fowler and Sons Inc worked with her closely and enjoyed the long relationship we had grown to appreciate and adore. Betty will not be forgotten. She will be remembered for her dedication and standard of excellence – unmatched by anyone.
Betty McAfee Shugart, 78, of Raleigh, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, passed away Tuesday evening November 12, 2013 at her home with her family by her side.
Betty was born in Black Mountain, NC on March 3, 1935, the daughter of the late Billy Joe McAfee and Marjorie Cordell McAfee. She was a team player at The Angus Barn restaurant in Raleigh for over 50 years. She began her career as a server, advancing to senior dining room manager and then kitchen manager. Betty oversaw one of the busiest kitchens in America, created recipes, trained hundreds of prep cooks and set a standard of excellence unmatched by anyone. She truly was an irreplaceable pillar at The Angus Barn and will be missed there forever.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, William H. Shugart; son, Billy Shugart (Susan); daughter, Kaye Knowles (Peter) and her faithful cocker spaniel companion “Freckles”. Betty is also survived by her brother, Billy Joe McAfee, Jr., four grandchildren; Jonathan Shugart, Lindsay Neese, Billy Shugart III, Jennifer Knowles and seven great grandchildren.
